Twelve Adages from Twelve-Step Programs

When you are going through addiction recovery at a drug rehab center, you need all the help and motivation you can get. Through the revered programs of Alcohol (AA) and Narcotics (NA) Anonymous, drug addicts find refuge in support groups that teach other new techniques to recognize the emotional triggers of addiction and how to avoid them to resist relapse. Twelve-step programs promote a large number of motivational phrases, slogans, and sayings that help members get through their addiction recovery, one day at a time. If you or anyone you know is still in need of treatment at a substance abuse facility, please call Intervention Association so that we can connect you with the ideal addiction recovery clinic immediately.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Used to ease anxiety about the long road of recovery ahead, taking gradual strides forward is the path towards sobriety that begins with a drug rehab center, and continues in meetings.

Bring the body and the mind will follow.
When enrolling at a substance abuse treatment center, the mind may still be far away craving drugs relentlessly. This saying speaks to that by saying that if you put your body through the necessary actions, the mind will eventually be at ease and sobriety will be that much easier to continue.

One drink is too many and a thousand isn’t enough.
Speaking to the alcoholic in every member of a meeting, any alcoholic knows that the spiral of relapse begins with only a single drink. Then, no amount of alcohol will satisfy their destructive cravings.

You are not alone.
Perhaps the most important message, drug addicts need to be told that they are not the only ones going through the pain and regret of substance abuse dependence. Everyone else at the meeting is going through the different stages of the same experience. They all know what it’s like to be addicted to something and tell each other constantly to help ease loneliness and hopelessness, especially when in an addiction treatment center.

Use the 24-hour plan.
Twelve-step programs emphasize the need to take everything one day at a time. If someone who is addicted to something gets overwhelmed by the idea that they will never use again, the anxiety may coerce them into relapse. The plan is to stay sober for the day at hand and not to worry about the rest.

Sobriety is a journey, not a destination.
Another spin on the adage from above, when taking the steps of addiction recovery, it is pivotal that the member doesn’t think about recovery ending, merely continuing perpetually. Alcoholics and drug addicts can never get one drink or one hit and be fine, continuous lifelong sobriety is mandatory for a full recovery.

To thine own self be true.
A faith based program, the Twelve-steps includes phrases from the Bible such as this one. Essentially saying to be true to yourself, it promotes the idea that the member’s true selves lies in abstinence from addictive substances.

When all else fails, follow directions.
When there comes a time when an individual doesn’t know the next step in their recovery, it is said that they should follow directions from their peers and Twelve-step book. In order to avoid relapse, members need to be taking deliberate steps towards continued sobriety.

The elevator is broken, use the steps.
Assuring that there is no easy way to achieve lifelong sobriety, instead taking slow and steady steps is necessary to keep on the right path. Thus utilizing the twelve steps of the program, group members can have a plan that may not be easy, but achievable and extremely rewarding.

If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.
Expanding on the idea that recovery is no simple task, this phrase says that taking the easy way will never produce fruitful results.

Count your blessings.
A much needed thing for those going through recovery to remember. Whether it’s at a drug rehab clinic, or years after initial sobriety, being grateful for being alive and well is key for living the positive, healthy life that only sobriety can provide.

This is a selfish program.
Meant very literally, the Twelve-Step program acknowledges that it exists to serve the needs of the individual. Each person’s sobriety is the top priority. And it is always emphasized that each member should put his/herself before anybody else while they are securing sobriety.
